Dunnottar Castle

There are places you visit…
and then there are places that stay with you.

Dunnottar Castle is one of those places.

Perched on the edge of the North Sea, just outside Stonehaven, this ruined fortress doesn’t just sit on the land — it owns it. Surrounded by steep cliffs and crashing waves, it feels like something straight out a film… only better, because it’s real.

🌊 First Impressions – That Walk In

Before you even reach the castle, you know you’re somewhere special.

The path down (and back up… you’ll feel it 😅) gives you that slow reveal — cliffs opening up, sea air hitting your face, and then suddenly… there it is.

Standing proud. Weathered. Timeless.

It’s the kind of place that makes you stop mid-walk just to take it in.

📜 A Bit of History (But the Good Kind)

Dunnottar isn’t just a pretty face — it’s got stories.

This place has seen battles, sieges, royalty… and secrets.

One of the most famous moments?
The Honours of Scotland (the Scottish Crown Jewels) were hidden here in the 1600s to keep them safe from Oliver Cromwell’s army. Not in some grand vault — but smuggled out and hidden by locals.

Real people. Real risk. Real history.

And when you stand there looking out over the sea… you can almost feel it.

🌅 Why It Hits Different

There’s something about Dunnottar that’s hard to explain.

Maybe it’s the rawness of the cliffs.
Maybe it’s the sound of the waves constantly crashing below.
Maybe it’s the fact it’s still standing after everything it’s been through.

Or maybe… it’s just Scotland being Scotland at its absolute best.

If you catch it at sunrise or sunset — that golden light hitting the stone — it honestly doesn’t feel real.

📸 A Photographer’s Dream

If you’ve got a camera (or even just your phone), you’re in for a treat.

Every angle gives you something different:

  • Wide dramatic landscapes
  • Close-up textures of the ruins
  • Silhouettes against the sky
  • Drone shots that look unreal

It’s one of those locations where you don’t need to try too hard… it does the work for you.

(You’ll leave with about 200 photos minimum… no judgement here 😄)

🎥 Bringing It to Life

On my last visit, I captured some footage and turned it into a wee video — pairing it with a song I created about Dunnottar.

And honestly… that combination of visuals, music, and atmosphere just brings it all back.

Because places like this aren’t just meant to be seen — they’re meant to be felt.

🚍 Seeing Scotland Like This… Properly

Dunnottar is just one stop on what could be an incredible Scottish journey.

And the best way to experience places like this?

Together.

Whether it’s a family trip, a group of friends, or visitors wanting to see the real Scotland — travelling comfortably, stopping where you want, taking it all in properly… that’s where the magic happens.

No rushing. No stress. Just moments.

Dunnottar Castle isn’t polished.
It’s not perfect.

And that’s exactly why it’s so special.

It’s wild, rugged, and full of stories — just like Scotland itself.

If you ever get the chance to go… take it.

And don’t just visit — stand still for a minute, breathe it in, and let it leave its mark.
