What the World Cup Reminds Me About Team Spirit
I'll start with a confession.
I know very little about football.
I couldn't tell you the formation Scotland should be playing, who should be starting, or whether the referee made the right decision. I'll leave those conversations to people who know far more than I ever will.
What I do understand, however, is people.
And every time the World Cup or any big event comes around, I notice something that I absolutely love.
People come together.
Across Scotland, you'll see flags appearing in windows, workplaces decorated in blue and white, families gathering around televisions, and complete strangers sharing the same hope that their nation can do well on the world's biggest football stage.
There is a genuine sense of pride.
This morning, one of our team members (Bev) sent me a photograph of another member (Blake) sitting proudly between two of our coaches, both decorated in support of Scotland. Nobody asked her to do it. She simply wanted to get involved and show her support and Blake sitting on the seat.... Loves a foti!!!
That photograph made me smile.
Not because of the football itself, but because it reminded me of something I see every day in business.
Team spirit matters.
Whether it's a football squad representing their country on the world stage or a group of drivers, mechanics, cleaners and office staff working together to keep a business moving forward, people achieve more when they feel part of something bigger than themselves.
At A1 Coaches, we are incredibly fortunate to have staff who genuinely care. They come up with ideas, send photographs, create content, support each other and take pride in what they do. The decorated coaches weren't part of a marketing plan. They were simply the result of people enjoying their work and getting behind something together.
As a business owner, that's the sort of culture I love to see.
The World Cup may be about football, but I think it's also about belonging. It's about communities coming together, sharing experiences and celebrating something collectively.
In a world where people often focus on what divides us, it's refreshing to see something that brings people together.
Ironically, the photograph also became the inspiration for this blog post. A member of staff created a moment, technology helped tell the story, and a few minutes later I was able to share it with thousands of people.
AI can certainly help us create content faster, but it can't create pride, enthusiasm or team spirit.
People do that.
So whilst I'll never claim to be a football expert, I can appreciate what the World Cup does for a nation. It gives people something to rally behind, something to celebrate and something to talk about.
And if we're lucky enough to have that same sense of team spirit in our businesses, workplaces and communities, then we're already winning.
Good luck Scotland. We'll be cheering you on from the sidelines. 🏴💙
